Switzerland is covered under Lyca Mobile's European data package, so if you already have an active Europe plan, there is nothing extra to buy to get online there. That is what we expected, anyway. We landed at Zurich Airport with our family of five, assuming our phones would just work. They did not.

Quick answer

QuestionAnswer
Can Lyca Mobile be used in Switzerland?Yes (Europe package)
Need to buy an extra roaming package? No
Need to buy a Swiss eSIM?No
Need to activate Data Roaming?Yes
Network used in SwitzerlandTypically SALT

Before You Fly: Checklist

Lyca Mobile Europe plan shown as active in the Lyca app Checking that the Lyca Europe package is still active before departure.

A few things worth confirming before you leave:

  • Lyca Europe package is still active
  • Data quota is still available
  • Data roaming is permitted in your account settings
  • APN is using Lyca's default configuration
  • Primary SIM is Lyca Mobile

The Moment You Land

Once you are on Swiss soil, Lyca Mobile sends a confirmation SMS notifying you of network access:

Welcome to Switzerland! Your EU roaming package is active on the local network (SALT). Please ensure Data Roaming is turned ON in your mobile device settings.

Tap the link in that message to confirm, then go into your phone's settings and turn on data roaming. After that, wait for a signal icon to show up.

What to do, in order:

  1. Turn off airplane mode
  2. Wait for the SMS from Lyca Mobile
  3. Open the confirmation link if needed
  4. Turn on Data Roaming
  5. Wait for the local network to appear
  6. If still not connected, reset your network settings

For us, steps 1 through 5 were not enough. Roaming was switched on, the confirmation was done, and we still had zero internet. Standing in Zurich Airport arrivals with three kids and no Google Maps is not a great place to be stuck.

The Fix: A Network Settings Reset

Network reset screen for mobile data on Android The network reset step that actually got our connection working.

This was the step that made the difference. If you are on Android:

  • Open Settings
  • Go to General Management
  • Tap Reset
  • Tap Reset Mobile Network Settings
  • Tap Reset Settings
  • Enter your phone PIN
  • Turn on airplane mode and leave it on for about 15 seconds
  • Turn airplane mode off, then re-enable data roaming

Android roaming settings menu with data roaming toggled on The Android roaming toggle, re-enabled after the network reset.

After the reset, our phones picked up two indicators: the R (roaming) symbol and a local 5G signal. Lyca Mobile connects through the SALT network in Switzerland, and once that locked in, everything worked, maps, SBB train schedules, WhatsApp, all of it.

Signs Roaming Actually Worked

  • The R (roaming) icon appears
  • A 4G or 5G signal shows up
  • Operator name changes to SALT or another local network
  • Internet works without Wi-Fi
  • WhatsApp immediately pulls in delayed messages

Troubleshooting

Common Questions

Is Lyca Mobile's Europe plan active in Switzerland?
Yes. Lyca Mobile's Europe region package covers Switzerland at no extra cost. You still need to turn on data roaming in your phone's settings first, before it actually connects.

Do you need a separate Swiss eSIM?
No. If your existing Lyca Mobile Europe package is active, there is no need for a separate Swiss eSIM or roaming add-on. The usual issue is a settings step, not a coverage gap.

Is a network reset needed if internet stays off?
Often, yes. If data roaming is on but you still have no internet, the fix is usually a network settings reset rather than a new SIM. On Android, that is Settings, General Management, Reset, Reset Mobile Network Settings, then toggling airplane mode for about 15 seconds before trying again.

Does Lyca Mobile use the SALT network?
Yes, typically. Lyca Mobile generally connects through the SALT network in Switzerland. Once the operator name shows SALT alongside a roaming icon, the connection is set.

Can you tell if roaming worked from the icons?
Yes. Look for the R (roaming) symbol next to your signal bars and a 4G or 5G indicator. If those show up and WhatsApp starts pulling in delayed messages, roaming is working.

The whole point is that we did not need a separate roaming add-on or a new eSIM. The European package we already had from traveling through other countries covered Switzerland too. It just needed one extra step to actually kick in.
